A Blog About Pharmaceutical Research

About

WELCOME,

Pharmaceuticals have been around for a long time but they have never been perfect.  The industry itself faces accusations of corruption and many drugs have severe side effects.  The University of Arizona's College of Pharmacy works to improve existing drugs and discover new cures for old diseases.  As I work with researchers in this department, I hope to discover the process behind this research.

Currently, research is being done on the effect of Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) on the metabolism of the Cancer Drug SR38.  NASH prevents the metabolism of SR38 which then leads to overdoses.  Although genetic tolerances to drugs are tested for, disease history is not, which leaves a large part of the population vulnerable to incorrect drug dosages.  NASH effects 20-30% of the population of Western countries which makes this study crucial for effective cancer treatment.

After helping with this research, I will write a paper on the research process and give a presentation detailing what I have learned throughout the course of my Senior Project.
